Aerospace historian to recount personal experience at So Cal Shuttle development site
LOS ANGELES – (August 29, 2022) – Aerospace historian Gerald Blackburn will spotlight “Southern California’s Magnificent Seven Spaceships” when the Flight Path Museum LAX Speaker Series resumes on September 24, 2022. The program will begin at 10 a.m. with free admission for museum members, a $20 donation for non-members, and free parking for all.
Blackburn’s talk will focus on development of NASA’s Space Shuttle program including the legendary Enterprise and Endeavour. The speaker will draw on experience as engineer and project manager with North American Aviation and Boeing, including 35 years at the plant in Downey where the Space Shuttle program was conceived. The site now is home to the Columbia Memorial Space Center, a science museum. Blackburn serves on the center foundation board of directors.
“Our speaker has first-hand knowledge not only of the shuttle program, but also of the talented men and women involved in the very beginning of America’s operational space transportation fleet,” said Agnes Huff, PhD, Flight Path Museum president “This is a wonderful opportunity to re-visit an epoch era in aerospace history.”
The Space Shuttle program flew from April 12, 1981, until July 21, 2011, including 135 missions. Throughout its lifetime, the Space Shuttle was used to conduct scientific research, deploy commercial, military, and scientific payloads, and was involved in the construction and operation of Mir and the ISS space stations.
